eMashobeni, 1 November 2025 – The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has commended the successful hosting Ukuthela Amanzi custom, held on 31 October 2025 at the eMashobeni Royal Palace in Pongolo.
The sacred cultural practice was led by His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and attended by amakhosi, maiden, amabutho, members of the royal family, and senior government officials.
The custom is a vital cultural rite and is performed as part of the process leading up-to the installation of Inkosi. It symbolises the spiritual cleansing of Inkosi’s and strengthens the bond between Inkosi and the Royal House.
In his remarks during the ceremony, which was attended by over 3,000 people, MEC Buthelezi praised the seamless coordination and strong collaboration between the Royal Household and the Department. He stated that the successful execution of the custom reflected the synergy between tradition and governance.
“This custom, Ukuthela Amanzi, holds great significance as it confirms that the individual occupying the throne is the rightful heir. It is recognised under the KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Leadership and Governance Act, 2005 (Act No. 5 of 2005),” said MEC Buthelezi.
MEC Buthelezi also expressed appreciation to His Majesty King Misuzulu kaZwelithini for his leadership in reviving this important custom, which reinforces the institution of traditional leadership throughout KwaZulu-Natal.
In his address, His Majesty extended gratitude to amakhosi and the royal family for their steadfast support, underscoring the collective responsibility in preserving the heritage of the Zulu nation.
His Majesty also paid homage to the Mthethwa lineage, acknowledging their historical significance:
“To Amakhosi akwaMthethwa — I would not be here today were it not for you. Please remain close, as you are integral to our history. This kingdom stands because of iLembe (King Shaka) and Dingiswayo. Let us continue to work together.”
Amakhosi who participated in the Ukuthela Amanzi custom included:

* Inkosi STZ Ndebele (Ndebele Traditional Authority, Zululand District)
* Inkosi PVN Ntombela (Nobamba Traditional Authority, Zululand District)
* Inkosi SW Mthethwa (Egodeni Traditional Authority, Zululand District)
* Inkosi MN Mthethwa (Mhlana Traditional Authority, King Cetshwayo District)
* Prince Xolani Zulu (Mfulamhle Traditional Authority Mzimkhulu, Harry Gwala District)
The event marked a significant milestone in the celebration and preservation of the rich cultural traditions of the Zulu nation.
