Jozini, 02 November 2025 – KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has urgently deployed disaster management teams to respond to the aftermath of a severe storm that struck Jozini Local Municipality, specifically affecting Wards 15 and 18 in the uMkhanyakude District yesterday.The storm, characterised by heavy rains and strong winds, caused extensive damage to infrastructure and residential properties.Preliminary reports from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre indicate that several households have been destroyed. Downed power lines have been reported in multiple areas, posing serious safety risks, while network connectivity remains unavailable, severely disrupting communication and coordination efforts.The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is leading a coordinated response, with assessment teams currently on the ground to determine the full extent of the damage and to identify affected households in need of urgent assistance.At this stage, no fatalities or injuries have been reported.Relief efforts are underway, with emergency support being provided to displaced families. The Department is working closely with local municipalities, Eskom, and other relevant stakeholders to restore essential services and ensure the safety of residents.MEC Buthelezi has expressed concern over the impact of the storm and reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to providing swift and effective support to affected communities. “We are prioritising the safety and well-being of our people. Our teams are on the ground conducting assessments and delivering relief. We urge residents to remain vigilant and avoid any areas where power lines have been damaged,” said MEC Buthelezi.Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution, especially near damaged infrastructure, and to report any emergencies to local authorities or disaster management officials.Further updates will be provided as assessments progress and more information becomes available.
